orientallyyours: Sanmao (三毛) starts out as a war orphan, and in “The Wanderings of Sanmao” (三毛流浪记), finds himself alone on the streets of Shanghai. He is walked on, beaten, mocked, and is constantly hungry. Sanmao’s good heart and poverty is contrasted with the selfishness and wealth of the rich (eg. while he is freezing on the wintry streets, dogs are clad in miniature fur coats). The Sanmao comics were an overt criticism of the KMT Nationalist Party, and reflected Sanmao’s creator, Zhang Leping’s Communist leanings. via AsiaObscura
